Spring/Summer 22: Picnic in Provence
The summer I turned 8, we went to Srinagar, Kashmir for a holiday. I remember a very long car ride and suddenly felt the temperature drop and a nip in the air as the cold breeze hit my nose. It was the first time I had felt cool temperatures. I remember getting out of the vehicle and seeing a Valley of flowers. To this day those first moments remind me of Monet's paintings. We stayed in a charming colonial bungalow with a garden where fresh flowers from the garden welcomed you into the living space. Days were spent wearing white muslin dresses and running around bonding with my cousins. We took long walks and had daily picnics among the flowers that always included cakes with our tea. I remember thinking only princesses must live like this, getting to eat cake every day. We took long leisurely boat rides on the Dal Lake which was covered in an overwhelming amount of pink and white lilies that it made you feel like you could just step off the boat on to the floating pads.
I wanted to create a collection that captured this childhood holiday in the valley of flowers, lake and carefree days that included a lot of cake. Memories from this holiday still reminds me of Monet's soft color palette. We aimed to create prints and fabrics that carry delicacy of soft watercolor paintings.
If you have been around for a while, you know we are a bit fabric obsessed here at Lali. I started this brand because I wanted to create fabrics, reminiscent of the ones I grew up wearing in India. Our prints are hand drawn every season. This season, I am so in love with our lily pad print. We used watercolors to create the lily pad motifs of this print. It’s printed on soft textured cotton chex. The combination of the watercolors and the texture of the fabric feels like a perfect match.
A soft pink floral print is done on our ever favorite cotton silk. My favorite fabric that feels rich and decadent as the mood of this collection.
A delicate handblocked print on the softest swiss dot dobby and two playful neutral woven checks fabric that feel like quintessential summer days.
We are so exited to get these beauties in your hands so you can spend your days reveling in their softness.
Finally, we shot this collection (with all of the Covid related travel restrictions) in the South of France in a little village of Bonnieux. The beauty of this location felt like it embodied the mood and feelings of this much loved collection.
