summer '26 - Petrichor

There’s a scent that rises just before the rain touches the ground—faint, earthy, and unforgettable. The Greeks gave it a name: Petrichor. And with it comes a flood of memory.

For those of us who grew up with monsoons, the first summer rain is a quiet ritual of return. The skies darken, the air stills—and then it begins. Gentle at first, then all at once. There’s always a mad dash by women and children to rescue the almost-dry laundry. And then, the irresistible pull of the rain—running outside barefoot, letting it soak through your hair and clothes, skin tingling, palms itching. Within the ancient wisdom of Aurveda, first rain is believed to cures skin ailments, and has healing properties. Joy of being made new.

There were paper boats too—hurriedly folded from pages torn out of forbitten school notebooks—racing through winding puddles and overflowing gutters like they had somewhere important to be.

Eventually, you’d be summoned back inside with shouts of “you’ll catch a cold!”—clothes dripping, spirits lifted, drawn in by the scent of spices crackling in hot oil. Plates of crisp bhajiyas (battered and fried) would appear like magic, alongside warm glasses of masala chai—the kind that fogs your glasses and warms you from the inside out.

The soil drank deeply. Trees looked greener. Everything felt washed in possibility.

In India, monsoon is more than a season—it’s a celebration. It brings delight, fecundity, and a welcome pause. It’s a cultural moment as much as a weather one—honored in poetry, song, cinema, and daily rituals passed down through generations.

The dark skies of monsoon also bring color to life in a way no sunny day ever could. Flowers, fabrics, painted walls—they all seem to glow against the grey. This contrast formed the heart of our summer color palette: bold yet grounded hues that feel alive with energy, grounded in nature, and deeply emotional.

This summer, Lali’s Petrichor collection pays homage to these rituals of slowness, joy, and renewal. Our fabrics are inspired by the textures of this world—lightweight cottons that breathe like rain-cooled air, voile and gauze that drift like monsoon winds, and yarn-dyed textiles that carry the irregular rhythm of weather and memory.

Silhouettes are loose and airy—designed for movement, comfort, and ease. Perfect for curling up in a reading nook, splashing through puddles, or losing track of time in a monsoon garden. Embroideries nod to the season’s smallest wonders: raindrops, blooming branches, the ripple of a puddle, the spiral of a snail shell.

Petrichor is more than a scent. It’s a season of pause. A language of memory. A window into a part of Indian life that’s deeply revered—never just three months of nuisance, but a reminder to slow down, reconnect, and feel it all.
