AUTUMN/WINTER '24: FOLKLORE

Growing up in India, during October/November, we celebrated Diwali at my grandparents' village. The whole family would spend a couple of weeks together in the village. The grandkids were aged from a few gangly teenage boys to toddling little 2 year olds.

In the afternoon and evenings, my grandma, mom, and aunts would feed us an early dinner because they wanted to start making all of the sweets and snacks that needed to be made for the Diwali celebrations. They would ask the men of the family to get us out of the house. It was my grandpa who would step up and take us on long, rambling walks that sometimes ended in getting sweets at the local shop.

For me, it was the walk with all of my cousins and the stories my grandpa told us that still remain so precious. He would allow the kids to find walking sticks and carry the littlest one piggy back. Then off we would walk through the farm land towards the main street.

We would start our walk just as the sun was starting its early descent into the horizon which brought in cool, crisp air. He would tell us local folklore and stories from the Indian epics; many having some ghostly ghouls twist to it.

As a child these walks felt wonderous and endless. The time stretched out and these evening hours felt full of joy and sweet memories. When I visit India now, my grandpa still tells me a story and I desperately wish for him to take his great grand kids on these rambling walks again.

Designing this collection was a way for me to share these sweet moments with the world. Creating a collection that embodies the joy I felt as a child with the hope that you and your little ones feel the same while creating your own lasting memories.
